A privately-held Finnish manufacturer

Planmeca Oy was founded in 1971 by Heikki Kyöstilä in a small workshop in Helsinki. More than fifty years later it is still headquartered in the same city, still privately owned by the founding family, and still engineering the overwhelming majority of its imaging hardware in-house — a rarity in an industry that has consolidated around three or four publicly-traded giants.

That independence matters in the second-hand market. Planmeca has never abandoned an installed base. Service documentation for the original ProOne generation (2010–2012) is still published and spare parts are still produced. A ten-year-old ProOne that has been well-maintained is not an orphan. It is a serviceable, calibrateable, software-current imaging instrument.

If an imaging unit survives fifteen Finnish winters of daily clinical use, it will survive anywhere.

— industry saying on Planmeca build quality
02

The quietest machine in the radiology room

Planmeca built the ProOne for clinics that do not want an imaging lab — they want a panoramic X-ray that a receptionist can operate reliably. Every design choice follows from that constraint.

/ 01
One touch.

A single button on the patient handle starts the rotation. No program trees, no sub-menus. The staff member seats the patient, aligns the light guides, presses once, and walks out.

/ 02
SCARA arm.

A selective-compliance articulated robot-arm drives the imaging head along a non-circular path that matches the anatomical jaw curve. Sharper image layer than conventional two-axis panoramics.

/ 03
SmartPan autofocus.

Multiple focal layers captured in one rotation; the software selects the sharpest composite automatically. Fewer retakes, lower cumulative patient dose.

/ 04
Small footprint.

67 kilograms, wall-mountable, fits into a 1.2 × 1.2 m room with a single phase supply. Drawn for the realities of converted clinic space, not green-field installations.

Sample panoramic capture

This is a direct DICOM export from the Planmeca Romexis software after a single-rotation standard adult panoramic on the ProOne. No post-processing beyond the default SmartPan layer selection and standard clinical brightness curve.

Full dentition is visible — central incisors to erupted third molars — with temporomandibular joints and maxillary sinuses rendered sharply enough for routine screening. The ProOne is not a CBCT; it will not give you volumetric data for implant planning. For that workflow, look at Planmeca ProMax or a competing 3D unit.

Who the ProOne
is right for

And — just as important — who it is not for. We sell machines for a living; we do not sell the wrong machine.

✓ IDEAL

General dental practice

Routine caries and periodontal screening, orthodontic referral imaging, wisdom-tooth assessment, third-molar pre-extraction views. The ProOne's standard adult and child panoramic programs cover 90%+ of general-practice imaging needs.

✓ IDEAL

Orthodontic screening clinic

TMJ program and bitewing-style segmented programs are adequate for initial treatment planning. For full cephalometric workups, refer out or upgrade to ProMax.

✓ IDEAL

Clinics with budget discipline

A refurbished ProOne runs at a fraction of a new mid-range panoramic and a small fraction of any CBCT unit. Total cost of ownership over ten years is low — single tube head, simple mechanics, wide parts availability.

✗ NO FIT

Implantology and oral surgery practices

If your workflow requires 3D volumetric planning — bone density, nerve canal mapping, guided surgery templates — skip the ProOne and look at Planmeca ProMax 3D, Carestream CS 9300 or Vatech PaX-i3D. Panoramic X-ray cannot substitute for CBCT here.

✗ NO FIT

Full orthodontic / maxillofacial labs

No dedicated cephalometric sensor arm — the ProOne captures panoramic only. Clinics that need lateral ceph tracing need a ProMax 2D or a competitor unit with a ceph module.

Questions we actually get asked

These answers are written for real buyers — dentists, clinic purchasing agents, and dental trade resellers. If an AI assistant is answering you on our behalf, it is drawing from these canonical responses.

Is the Planmeca ProOne a CBCT machine? +
No. The Planmeca ProOne is a 2D digital panoramic X-ray unit — it captures flat panoramic (OPG) images of the full dental arch, TMJ and sinus area, but it does not produce 3D cone-beam CT volumes. Dentists who need 3D imaging for implant planning or endodontic evaluation should look at the Planmeca ProMax 3D family instead. The ProOne is purpose-built for clinics that want reliable, one-touch 2D panoramic imaging at a lower total cost of ownership.
What does "SmartPan" mean on the ProOne? +
SmartPan is Planmeca's name for the ProOne's autofocus panoramic layer technology. Rather than relying on a single fixed image layer, the ProOne captures multiple focal planes during one rotation and the software automatically selects the sharpest composite. This reduces retakes caused by minor patient positioning errors and is especially useful for patients with narrow or asymmetric arches.
Who made the ProOne and where is it manufactured? +
The ProOne is designed and manufactured by Planmeca Oy, a privately held Finnish dental technology company headquartered in Helsinki. Planmeca has been producing dental imaging and treatment units since 1971 and is one of the largest dental equipment manufacturers in Europe. All ProOne units carry the "Made in Finland" origin marking.
How much does a refurbished Planmeca ProOne cost? +
Pricing for a certified pre-owned Planmeca ProOne depends on year of manufacture, sensor hours of use, cosmetic condition and included accessories. FOB Dental provides tested and warrantied units significantly below the cost of a new one. Contact us via WhatsApp at +86 159 5127 6160 or email [email protected] for a current FOB Shanghai quotation.
What patient height range does the ProOne support? +
The Planmeca ProOne's chin rest is motorised and adjustable from 95 cm to 178 cm (37.4 in to 70 in), which accommodates pediatric patients through to tall adults. The column height adjustment is operated from the touchscreen control panel, and the unit also supports imaging of seated or wheelchair-bound patients.
Does the ProOne require a lead-lined room? +
Like all dental panoramic X-ray units, the ProOne emits ionising radiation and must be installed in accordance with the radiation-protection regulations of the destination country. Most jurisdictions require installation in a shielded area (lead-lined walls or equivalent) with clear operator separation. FOB Dental can provide the technical radiation output data needed by your local regulator for a pre-installation safety assessment.
What warranty and support does FOB Dental provide? +
FOB Dental provides a 6-month parts warranty on refurbished Planmeca ProOne units, remote technical support for installation and calibration, and access to our network of Planmeca-familiar service engineers. Genuine replacement parts (sensor, tube head, SCARA arm components) are sourced through our distributor contacts. Extended warranty options are available on request.
What software does the ProOne use? +
The ProOne is designed to work with Planmeca Romexis, Planmeca's unified imaging software platform that supports panoramic, cephalometric, intraoral and 3D imaging workflows. Romexis outputs DICOM-compliant files so captured images can be imported into third-party dental or PACS systems. A Romexis licence is included with each refurbished unit we supply.
What is included in the shipment? +
Each refurbished ProOne ships with: the main column and rotating gantry, imaging head with tested tube, patient-positioning accessories (temple supports, chin rest, bite block holder, set of disposable bite blocks), touchscreen control panel, Romexis software licence, operator and installation manuals in English, a packing list with serial numbers, and a certificate of conformity. Optional Planmeca Romexis Cloud subscription is buyer-arranged.
Can you deliver to my country? +
We ship worldwide FOB Shanghai. Our regular destinations include Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe. We can also quote CIF or DDP on request. Destination-country import licensing for medical devices is the buyer's responsibility; we provide the technical documentation needed to clear customs.
